David Ortiz leaves game with back spasms

David Ortiz left today’s game against the Blue Jays in the ninth inning after hurting his back with a swing. After the game he said it was just back spasms and that it’s not much cause for concern.

He’s day-to-day and it’s unclear if he’ll miss any time. Worth noting that this afternoon and evening he’ll be flying from Toronto to Tampa Bay, and old backs don’t do too well on airplanes, even if the airplanes are posh chartered jobs. ¬†Wouldn’t hurt to give him a day off, but we’ll know if he gets one tomorrow afternoon.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that there is some momentum in talks between the Mariners and free agent outfielder Jon Jay.

Jay, 32, hit .296/.374/.375 in 433 plate appearances with the Cubs last season, which is adequate. He’s heralded more for his defense and his ability to play all three outfield spots.

The Mariners are losing center fielder Jarrod Dyson to free agency and likely don’t want to rely on Guillermo Heredia next season, hence the interest in Jay. The free agent class for center fielders is otherwise relatively weak.
