Justin Masterson wants to rejoin the Indians, but he’ll make at least one more rehab start

Justin Masterson tossed five innings in a minor-league rehab start Sunday, but rather than welcoming him back from the disabled list the Indians will have the right-hander make another rehab start.

Indians manager Terry Francona told Alex Smith of MLB.com that Masterson “probably wanted to come back and pitch, but I think we all thought one more start would be beneficial.”

Masterson pitched reasonably well in the rehab outing, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out six and walking two, but he was such a mess before going on the disabled list that it makes sense for the Indians to be cautious bringing him back.

According to former major leaguer and current broadcaster Ryan Spilborghs, Jenny Cavnar will be calling play-by-play of Monday night’s game against the Padres for the Rockies. The broadcast will be on AT&T Sportsnet Rocky Mountain Region.

Cavnar will be at least the third woman to call televised play-by-play for a major league team, joining Gayle Gardner (Rockies, 1993) and Suzyn Waldman (Yankees, mid-1990’s).

Broadcasting remains largely the domain of white men, so it’s always good when women and people of color are able to have a seat in the broadcasting booth.
