According to Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com, the Cardinals have officially agreed to terms with first-round pick right-hander Luke Weaver.

Weaver, who was selected No. 27 overall out of Florida State in this month’s First-Year Player Draft, will receive a bonus at the slot value of $1.843 million. He’s expected to report the Cardinals’ Gulf Coast League affiliate on Wednesday to get his pro career off the ground.

Here’s the write-up on Weaver from our own Matthew Pouliot:

Weaver has a 91-94 mph fastball with sinking action and a plus changeup, which helped him go 8-4 with a 2.62 ERA and an 85/23 K/BB ratio in 106 1/3 innings this season. He probably lacks top-of-the-rotation upside, but he’s a good bet to become a useful starter and he should move pretty quickly, not that the Cardinals really need him to do so.

MLB.com’s Jenifer Langosch reports that the Cardinals have named Mike Shildt the new bench coach and Jose Oquendo will once again serve as the third base coach. Willie McGee is also expected to join the coaching staff.

David Bell had been the Cardinals’ bench coach, but he just took a job with the Giants as the farm director. Shildt had been the third base coach and Oquendo most recently served as assistant to GM Michael Girsch.

The Cardinals are still looking for a pitching coach after getting rid of Derek Lilliquist.
