Per the Pirates official Twitter, the club has picked up Wirfin Obispo off of waivers from the Braves and assigned him to Triple-A Indianapolis. The Braves had designated Obispo for assignment yesterday, creating room for Shae Simmons on the roster.
Obispo, 29, posted a 4.66 ERA with a 21/12 K/BB ratio in 19 1/3 innings with Triple-A Gwinnett. While the Pirates may not use Obispo in the majors right away, he’ll serve as bullpen depth for the club after they traded Bryan Morris to the Marlins earlier today.
MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that there is some momentum in talks between the Mariners and free agent outfielder Jon Jay.
Jay, 32, hit .296/.374/.375 in 433 plate appearances with the Cubs last season, which is adequate. He’s heralded more for his defense and his ability to play all three outfield spots.
The Mariners are losing center fielder Jarrod Dyson to free agency and likely don’t want to rely on Guillermo Heredia next season, hence the interest in Jay. The free agent class for center fielders is otherwise relatively weak.
