Reds closer Aroldis Chapman was expected to come off the disabled list and return from facial fractures this weekend, but first he needed to get through a few minor-league rehab appearances and … well, they have gone very badly.
Chapman allowed five runs in two-thirds of an inning yesterday at Triple-A and then followed that up today by allowing three more runs in one-third of an inning. Overall he recorded three outs in two appearances while giving up eight runs on seven hits and two walks. Oof.
Reports of his velocity have been very encouraging, including some triple-digit heat, but it’s hard to imagine the Reds activating Chapman unless he can put together a couple problem-free appearances first.
