The Dodgers Opening Day lineup announced — Yasiel Puig leading off

Don Mattingly said he’d do it, and he has. Here’s the Dodgers Opening Day lineup, featuring Yasiel Puig in the leadoff slot:

1. Yasiel Puig RF
2. Justin Turner 2B
3. Hanley Ramirez SS
4. Adrian Gonzalez 1B
5. Scott Van Slyke LF
6. Juan Uribe 3B
7. Andre Ethier CF
8. A.J. Ellis C
9. Clayton Kershaw P

Of course Puig batted leadoff a good bit last season. When he did, he hit better than he did in other lineup slots, if that means anything. Bonus lineup fact: Don Mattingly is compelled by the Rule of National League Managers to bat his second baseman second. Seriously: it’s a more immutable natural law than Thermodynamics and stuff.

Daniel Murphy said today that he will not be ready for Opening Day and will start the year on the disabled list.

Murphy had microfracture knee surgery last October. While he has been able to take batting practice and field ground balls, his lateral movement is still limited. In his absence — which is not expected to last past mid-April or so — Howie Kendrick will get the bulk of the playing time at second base.

Murphy hit .322/.384/.543, smacked 23 homers and knocked in 93 RBI in 2017.
