Padres, Chase Headley unlikely to get a contract extension done

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports writes that the Padres and third baseman Chase Headley appear unlikely to agree to a contract extension before he heads into free agency. The club offered him an unknown amount over the winter, but talks dissipated.

Headley had a breakout season in 2012, finishing with an .875 OPS and a fifth-place finish in NL MVP voting, but suffered a broken left thumb and continues to be bothered by a strained calf. His numbers last season, while respectable, didn’t quite match 2012’s output.

Unless the Padres are right in the thick of things in late July, it is quite likely that Headley will be used as a trade chip before the deadline on the 31st.

The Mets have scratched Jacob deGrom from tonight’s start against the San Diego Padres because of the risk of rain in New York. Rafael Montero will start in deGrom’s place.

Manager Terry Collins said there is no physical issue with deGrom, but that because of the chance of rain, he didn’t want to risk a short outing. de Grom will start Friday’s game against the Pirates.

Red Sox to activate David Price for a Monday start

Earlier today we talked about how David Price was knocked around in a minor league rehab start. Apparently he felt good while being knocked around because he’s going to make a start for the Red Sox on Monday afternoon against the White Sox.

Healthy is all that truly matters at this point, what with Drew Pomeranz struggling and Steven Wright out for the year. The Sox need someone to eat some innings at the moment. If it takes him a bit to get super sharp, well, so be it.
