Passed over for manager jobs, Tim Wallach may shift role with Dodgers

Dodgers third base coach Tim Wallach was a finalist for the manager gigs in Detroit and Seattle, but now that he’s been passed over for Brad Ausmus and Lloyd McClendon he may switch roles in Los Angeles.

Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports that the Dodgers are considering shifting Wallach from third base coach to bench coach, where he’d replace the recently fired Trey Hillman as Don Mattingly’s right-hand man. Hillman and Mattingly were incredibly close on and off the field, so that could be a bit of a weird situation. Wallach has spent three years coaching third base on Mattingly’s staff.

Angels starter Jaime Barrios and Giants first baseman Brandon Belt set a new modern record with a 21-pitch at-bat in the first inning of Sunday afternoon’s game in Anaheim. Belt fell behind 1-2 and mostly kept fouling pitches off. The count ran full on the ninth pitch and Belt would foul off 11 more pitches before finally lining out to right field.

As Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle notes, the previous record was set on June 26, 1998 when the Indians’ Bartolo Colon and the Astros’ Ricky Gutierrez battled for 20 pitches. Gutierrez eventually struck out.
