The funny part about people saying “watch the man play” is that BIS defensive runs saved is computed by WATCHING EVERY SINGLE PLAY made by every player. That’s the basis for the metric. Watch every single baseball and plot where it fell and how many times it was caught. Based on this you can compute the league average for each position on how often baseballs are caught in defined “plots” of the baseball field. Then you see how a specific player did against the average. While the end result is computed, the data that makes these numbers possible is done by WATCHING EVERY SINGLE PLAY ON THE FIELD.
