Stephen Strasburg expects to return this week

Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg was scratched from his scheduled Friday start against the Phillies after experiencing forearm tightness while working on a new pitch during his pregame bullpen session. But it wasn’t a major concern then and signs are looking promising for a quick return.

Mark Zuckerman of CSNWashington.com reports that Strasburg played long toss from a distance of 120 feet on Sunday morning at Nationals Park and was free of arm discomfort. He will test himself on a mound on Monday and is aiming to rejoin the Nats’ starting rotation this Thursday against the Marlins.

Strasburg, 25, owns a 2.96 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 181/52 K/BB ratio in 170 innings this season.

The Nationals are trying to work their way into the NL Central-dominated NL Wild Card mix.

The Boston Red Sox announced this afternoon that they’ve traded lefty Roenis Elias to the Seattle Mariners for a player to be named later or cash.

Boston had acquired Elias in the same trade that netted them reliever Carson Smith in exchange for Wade Miley and Jonathan Aro back in December of 2015. Since that time Elias has not been a part of the Red Sox’ plans, pitching in just four big league games — eight innings total — in all of 2016 and 2017 and not making an appearance for the big club this season. He was pretty solid for Pawtucket in 2016 but 2017 was largely lost to injuries.

Now he’s headed back to Seattle where, once upon a time, Elias posted a 3.85 ERA in 29 starts as a rookie for the Mariners.
