Diamondbacks activate right-hander Trevor Cahill from disabled list

After missing over six weeks with hip and shoulder issues, Diamondbacks right-hander Trevor Cahill has been activated from the 15-day disabled list. He’ll make his return this afternoon when he starts against the Pirates in Pittsburgh.

Cahill originally landed on the disabled list on July 1 with a right hip contusion, but he tweaked his throwing shoulder not too long after that. He posted a 4.57 ERA and 22/11 K/BB ratio in 21 2/3 innings over four minor league rehab starts between the D’Backs’ rookie league team and Triple-A Reno.

Cahill thrived during his first season in Arizona, but he has a 4.66 ERA and 69/39 K/BB ratio over 96 2/3 innings across 16 starts this season. The Diamondbacks are hoping for something closer to his 2012 production as they attempt to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The Braves claimed lefty reliever Grant Dayton off waivers from the Dodgers, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports.

Dayton, 29, underwent Tommy John surgery back in August and is almost certainly out for the entire 2018 season. The Braves, obviously, are making a longer-term play here by acquiring him, as he is under team control through 2022.

Over parts of two seasons in the majors, Dayton has a 3.42 career ERA with 59 strikeouts and 18 walks in 50 innings.
