Zack Greinke tosses a two-hit shutout against the Rockies

Dodgers starter Zack Greinke made his best start of the season tonight, blanking the Rockies over nine innings as the Dodgers provided the bare minimum run support in a 1-0 victory. Greinke allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out nine — and he didn’t record his first strikeout until the fifth inning. The lone run came on a Hanley Ramirez RBI groundout in the bottom of the second inning.

Rockies starter Tyler Chatwood was nearly as good, allowing just the one run in an eight-inning complete game. He allowed four hits and walked two while striking out four, lowering his ERA to 2.56 over 12 starts. Chatwood snaps the Rockies’ streak of 299 consecutive starts without a complete game, tweets Tracy Ringolsby.

The win is the Dodgers’ sixth in their last seven games and they are finally above .500 for the first time since April 15. The first-place Diamondbacks, leading the Dodgers by a meager two games now, play the last-place Padres tonight.

Former Phillies right-hander Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez died in a traffic accident in Havana on Thursday, per reports from the El Nuevo Herald and CiberCuba. No other deaths or injuries have been reported in connection to the accident. Gonzalez was 34 years old.

The Cuban righty defected from his home country in 2013 and signed a three-year, $12 million contract with the Phillies. A bout of right shoulder tendinitis compromised his bid for a major league role, but he finally broke through to the big leagues at the tail end of the 2014 season and turned in a 6.75 ERA, 5.1 BB/9 and 8.4 SO/9 in just six outings. Another case of shoulder inflammation derailed any progress he might have made in 2015, however, and he recorded just five innings in Triple-A Lehigh Valley before the team officially released him prior to the 2016 season.

The Phillies released a statement following news of Gonzalez’s death:
