Chris Young re-signs with the Nationals

Chris Young opted out of his minor-league contract with the Nationals and was released last week, but now he’s back with Washington on another minor-league deal.

At the time the assumption was that Young could find a better opportunity elsewhere considering the strength of the Nationals’ rotation, but apparently not. He’ll report to Triple-A and wait for an injury to one of the established starters.

Young’s velocity was low during spring training, even for him, but it’s still surprising that no teams wanted to grab him as a short-term fifth starter considering the 34-year-old right-hander had a 4.15 ERA and 80/36 K/BB ratio in 115 innings for the Mets last season.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that there is some momentum in talks between the Mariners and free agent outfielder Jon Jay.

Jay, 32, hit .296/.374/.375 in 433 plate appearances with the Cubs last season, which is adequate. He’s heralded more for his defense and his ability to play all three outfield spots.

The Mariners are losing center fielder Jarrod Dyson to free agency and likely don’t want to rely on Guillermo Heredia next season, hence the interest in Jay. The free agent class for center fielders is otherwise relatively weak.
