The Yankees sign Brennan Boesch

The Tigers released Brennan Boesch on Wednesday. I told everyone who would listen that I’d be shocked if he wasn’t playing for a New York team — either one — by the close of business Thursday. I was only a day off, it seems, as the Yankees have just signed him to a a major league deal. Theoretically Boesch will compete with Ben Francisco and Juan Rivera for time in left field. Though I guess Rivera will be covering first base until Mark Teixeira comes back.

Boesch hit a mere .240 with 12 homers and a .659 OPS in 132 games last season. He was much better in 2011, posting an OPS of .799, but that was an average-heavy spike, suggesting that his 2012 and 2010 production is the better expectation going forward.

The Twins just announced that they have signed pitcher Michael Pineda to a two-year contract.

Pineda, 28, has a 4.05 career ERA and has struck out 9.1 batters per nine innings over 680 career major league innings.

Pineda underwent Tommy John surgery this past July, so the Twins are buying a 2018 filled mostly with rehab and a pitcher for 2019. As such, the deal is probably not too taxing financially, but could pay off pretty well for them if Pineda comes back strong.
