Jesse Crain still not ready for game action due to hip injury

Jesse Crain hasn’t pitched since February 25 and had to bail on Team Canada in the World Baseball Classic because of a hip injury, but the White Sox setup man expects to be ready for Opening Day.

Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports that Crain threw a bullpen session Wednesday, but then decided against pitching in a minor-league game because “I can tell when I’m ready to throw in a game and as of yesterday I wasn’t.”

Crain repeatedly stressed that his arm feels great, but he’s having problems “pushing through the pitches” because his leg extension is lacking.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that there is some momentum in talks between the Mariners and free agent outfielder Jon Jay.

Jay, 32, hit .296/.374/.375 in 433 plate appearances with the Cubs last season, which is adequate. He’s heralded more for his defense and his ability to play all three outfield spots.

The Mariners are losing center fielder Jarrod Dyson to free agency and likely don’t want to rely on Guillermo Heredia next season, hence the interest in Jay. The free agent class for center fielders is otherwise relatively weak.
