Prince Fielder trains mixed martial arts with his kids

Within a ClickOrlando.com story about the increasing number of kids getting into mixed martial arts is an interesting little tidbit about Prince Fielder, his kids, and being bullied:

“It happened to me as a kid, and it happens to them as well,” says Prince Fielder, the All-Star first baseman for the Detroit Tigers.

Even a pro athlete like Fielder knows the painful realities of bullying. He and his two sons train at The VI Levels. And Fielder says that MMA is already turning his kids into men.

“I just never want them to feel, have their feelings hurt or lose confidence, just because of what someone says,” says Fielder.

I’m sure some people will read the article and freak out about kids doing MMA, because people seem to freak out about MMA in general, but it’s not much different than kids taking karate classes or wrestling or whatever.

More importantly: At 5-foot-11 and 275 pounds I bet Prince Fielder is a helluva grappler.

The Giants announced on Monday night the signing of outfielder Austin Jackson. According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, it’s a two-year, $6 million deal with performance incentives that allow Jackson to earn up to an additional $2.5 million for a total of $8.5 million.

Jackson, who soon turns 31 years old, spent last season with the Indians. In 318 plate appearances, he hit .318/.387/.482 with seven home runs, 35 RBI, and 46 runs scored.

The Giants have been on the hunt for a center fielder and Jackson addresses that need relatively cheaply. Jackson will join Hunter Pence and newcomer Andrew McCutchen in the outfield.
