Vernon Wells plans to retire after his contract is up

Vernon Wells said today that he plans to retire once his current contract is over, which is funny because he’s signed through 2014 and owed another $42 million from the Angels.

If not for the contract Wells would have been released a long time ago and may have had trouble simply remaining in the big leagues after hitting .222 with a .667 OPS in two seasons for the Angels.

So considering he’ll be 36 years old once the contract is up Wells may not really have much of a choice in the matter. He’ll also have earned more than $150 million by then, so calling it quits to spend time with his family is a nice plan either way.

The Braves got a scare last night after first baseman Freddie Freeman was hit on the left wrist by a Hoby Milner fastball in the bottom of the eighth inning. It was doubly scary given that, less than a year ago, the same wrist was fractured when Aaron Loup plunked him last year, causing Freeman to miss over a month and a half.

Good news, though: the Braves just announced that Freeman’s X-rays are negative and that he’s day-to-day.

On the season, Freeman is batting .288/.468/.492 with two home runs, 12 RBI, and 12 runs scored in 79 plate appearances.
