Matt Thornton diagnosed with elbow inflammation

Matt Thornton skipped today’s drills and underwent an MRI exam because of elbow soreness, but the White Sox reliever has been diagnosed with merely inflammation.

“He just said he didn’t feel right,” manager Robin Ventura said, via Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune. “We have so much time down here, it’s safer to slow him down and get him out of drills and make sure he’s comfortable before he continues on.”

Thornton spent a couple weeks on the disabled list with elbow inflammation in late-2010, but hasn’t had any arm issues since then.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that there is some momentum in talks between the Mariners and free agent outfielder Jon Jay.

Jay, 32, hit .296/.374/.375 in 433 plate appearances with the Cubs last season, which is adequate. He’s heralded more for his defense and his ability to play all three outfield spots.

The Mariners are losing center fielder Jarrod Dyson to free agency and likely don’t want to rely on Guillermo Heredia next season, hence the interest in Jay. The free agent class for center fielders is otherwise relatively weak.
