Texas Rangers reliever Joakim Soria was smiling on Sunday, pleased that after throwing three bullpen sessions his arm has felt good. He still feels that some time in May is a realistic target for his return.

“I won’t know for sure until I face hitters,” Soria said. “Threw the first few bullpens, everything has gone smooth. That is nice.”

Soria had Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery a little more than 10 months ago. He signed a two-year, $8 million free agent contract with the Rangers this winter and will operate as a setup man in front of closer Joe Nathan once he’s back to full strength.

Soria, 28, owns a 2.40 career ERA, a 1.04 career WHIP and a 9.7 career K/9 through five MLB seasons.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that there is some momentum in talks between the Mariners and free agent outfielder Jon Jay.

Jay, 32, hit .296/.374/.375 in 433 plate appearances with the Cubs last season, which is adequate. He’s heralded more for his defense and his ability to play all three outfield spots.

The Mariners are losing center fielder Jarrod Dyson to free agency and likely don’t want to rely on Guillermo Heredia next season, hence the interest in Jay. The free agent class for center fielders is otherwise relatively weak.
