George Steinbrenner bought the Yankees 40 years ago today

Forty years ago today George Steinbrenner purchased the New York Yankees. The price? $10 million, which is what the Cubs are paying Carlos Villanueva over the next two years. The then-stated managerial philosophy:

“We plan absentee ownership as far as running the Yankees is concerned. We’re not going to pretend we’re something we aren’t. I’ll stick to building ships.”

Didn’t quite work out that way. But 40 years later the Steinbrenner family still owns the team and stands as the longest-tenured ownership group in the game.

Happy Boss-a-versary, Yankees fans.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that there is some momentum in talks between the Mariners and free agent outfielder Jon Jay.

Jay, 32, hit .296/.374/.375 in 433 plate appearances with the Cubs last season, which is adequate. He’s heralded more for his defense and his ability to play all three outfield spots.

The Mariners are losing center fielder Jarrod Dyson to free agency and likely don’t want to rely on Guillermo Heredia next season, hence the interest in Jay. The free agent class for center fielders is otherwise relatively weak.
