Ozzie Smith auctioned off his Gold Gloves for $519,203

Ozzie Smith announced in October that he’d be auctioning off his Gold Glove awards and World Series rings to raise money for “estate and family planning” and yesterday the auctions came to an end.

His two World Series rings–both of which were given to him as gifts by the Cardinals for their 2006 and 2011 runs–went for $51,364 and $42,448. And his 13 Gold Glove awards went for a total of $519,203.

So once the auction house subtracts its 20 percent commission Smith will end up with around $490,000 or about 1.4 percent of the total salary he was paid during his Hall of Fame career.

Maybe he truly doesn’t care about the Gold Glove awards, but this whole thing is kind of sad.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that there is some momentum in talks between the Mariners and free agent outfielder Jon Jay.

Jay, 32, hit .296/.374/.375 in 433 plate appearances with the Cubs last season, which is adequate. He’s heralded more for his defense and his ability to play all three outfield spots.

The Mariners are losing center fielder Jarrod Dyson to free agency and likely don’t want to rely on Guillermo Heredia next season, hence the interest in Jay. The free agent class for center fielders is otherwise relatively weak.
