David Price to skip Saturday start with shoulder soreness

Uh oh.

Tampa Bay just announced that David Price will not make his scheduled start tomorrow due to “general soreness” in his shoulder.

Chris Archer, the International League strikeout leader who was just called up from Triple-A, will take his place against the Rangers.

According to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times both Price and executive vice president Andrew Friedman are saying that the skipped turn in the rotation is precautionary and for now at least he’s penciled in to face the Yankees next weekend.

Or as Friedman put it: “We feel confident it is not a major situation.”

Price is 17-5 with a 2.54 ERA and 175/54 K/BB ratio in 181 innings this season and led the league with 34 starts last year.

The Cleveland Indians have agreed to a minor league deal with outfielder Melvin Upton, Jr.

Upton, 33, battled a torn thumb ligament and a shoulder issue last season, limiting him to only 12 games with Triple-A Sacramento, the Giants’ affiliate. In those 12 games, he hit .244 with one double and one home run. Upton last played in the majors in 2016 with the Padres and Blue Jays with which he posted an aggregate .693 OPS.

Given the injuries suffered by Indians outfielders in the past couple of seasons it can’t hurt to have some options for organizational depth. If he has anything left in the tank, stash him on the bench or down in Columbus. If not, no harm done.
