Reds decide to keep Joey Votto at Triple-A for one more day

Joey Votto was expected to come off the disabled list and rejoin the Reds’ lineup today, but his return from two knee surgeries has been delayed for at least one more day.

Votto homered Saturday and then took Sunday off, but instead of playing against the Phillies this afternoon he’ll remain at Triple-A for Louisville’s final game of the season.

Tom Groeschen of Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Votto is expected to come off the DL tomorrow, but also notes that the Reds haven’t announced anything officially and clearly they aren’t interested in rushing the former MVP back.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that there is some momentum in talks between the Mariners and free agent outfielder Jon Jay.

Jay, 32, hit .296/.374/.375 in 433 plate appearances with the Cubs last season, which is adequate. He’s heralded more for his defense and his ability to play all three outfield spots.

The Mariners are losing center fielder Jarrod Dyson to free agency and likely don’t want to rely on Guillermo Heredia next season, hence the interest in Jay. The free agent class for center fielders is otherwise relatively weak.
