Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports that the Mets have agreed to terms with first-round pick Gavin Cecchini, pending a physical.
Cecchini, a high school shortstop out of Louisiana, was selected No. 12 overall in Monday’s First-Year Player Draft. The exact terms aren’t yet known, but the slot value for the pick was $2.55 million.
Cecchini, who hits from the right side of the plate, checks in at 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds. The 18-year-old is highly-regarded for his speed and defensive abilities and many talent evaluators believe he’ll be able to stick at shortstop in the long-term. His brother, Garin, is a third base prospect in the Red Sox organization.
