HBT Extra: Previewing the NL East

This is a bit of a time warp. We actually taped this NL East preview a few weeks ago, before all the other HBT Extra previews we did. It got lost in the video shuffle somewhere, however (i.e. I’m really disorganized sometimes, guys).  But here it is, better late than never.

Except for any of the parts that are now outdated or wrong. Then it’s worse late.  But I pick the Phillies to win the division, so you Philly deadenders will like it anyway. At least until you forget that I picked the Phillies sometime this spring and accuse me of being a hater.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that there is some momentum in talks between the Mariners and free agent outfielder Jon Jay.

Jay, 32, hit .296/.374/.375 in 433 plate appearances with the Cubs last season, which is adequate. He’s heralded more for his defense and his ability to play all three outfield spots.

The Mariners are losing center fielder Jarrod Dyson to free agency and likely don’t want to rely on Guillermo Heredia next season, hence the interest in Jay. The free agent class for center fielders is otherwise relatively weak.
