Darren Oliver’s deal: $4 million plus an option

Darren Oliver’s signing with the Blue Jays — which we’ve known about for a while — was actually announced today, complete with terms: he gets $4 million for 2012 with a $3 million team option for 2013. There is a $500K buyout of that option, so his guaranteed money is $4.5 million.

Not bad for a 41-year old dude. Of course, he’s coming off his best year — a 2.29 ERA in 61 lefty-destroying appearances — so it was pretty certain that he was going to do well regardless.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that there is some momentum in talks between the Mariners and free agent outfielder Jon Jay.

Jay, 32, hit .296/.374/.375 in 433 plate appearances with the Cubs last season, which is adequate. He’s heralded more for his defense and his ability to play all three outfield spots.

The Mariners are losing center fielder Jarrod Dyson to free agency and likely don’t want to rely on Guillermo Heredia next season, hence the interest in Jay. The free agent class for center fielders is otherwise relatively weak.
