Cubs president Theo Epstein has told reporters over and over that he’s not shopping right-hander Matt Garza this offseason. But most signs point to that claim being untrue. Like, well, this one:
According to Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago, the Rangers and Cubs have engaged in talks about a potential Garza trade at this week’s Winter Meetings in Dallas. No match has been found yet, but it sounds as though discussions are ongoing.
Garza, 28, had a cool 3.32 ERA and 197/63 K/BB ratio over 198 innings this past year for Chicago. He’s eligible for arbitration this winter and due a significant raise over the $5.95 million he earned in 2011.
