MLB may grant extension in Theo Epstein compensation talks

Bud Selig said last week that he would step in as arbitrator if the Red Sox and Cubs couldn’t come to an agreement on compensation for Theo Epstein by November 1. While we heard this morning that no real progress has been made in negotiations, don’t look for Selig to get involved just yet.

According to Patrick Mooney of CSNChicago.com, there’s a “good chance” that MLB will grant an extension on talks before the issue is turned over to the commissioner. In other words, this issue will have a few more days of shelf life before becoming an afterthought in the Hot Stove landscape.

The latest we’ve heard is that the Red Sox are asking for two players in return for Epstein. The Cubs understandably balked at the initial request of Matt Garza, but it’s believed that the Red Sox covet prospect right-hander Trey McNutt.

Infielder Trevor Plouffe has signed a minor league deal with the Phillies, Gerry Fraley of the Dallas Morning News reports. Plouffe asked for and was granted his release from the Rangers earlier this month.

Plouffe, 31, had a double and a home run in 17 plate appearances with Triple-A Round Rock to start the 2018 season. He spent last year with the Athletics and Rays, putting up a meager .198/.272/.318 batting line in 100 games.

Plouffe has mostly played third base throughout his career, but can also handle the other three infield spots and both outfield corners, so he’ll serve as organizational depth at Triple-A Lehigh Valley for the Phillies.
