If you’re into plots and storylines, you’ll love this.
According to the Cardinals’ official Twitter feed, pitching coach Dave Duncan will return to the dugout for Wednesday night’s regular season finale against the Astros after missing nearly all of September to be with his wife, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
There’s no way to quantify the impact of Duncan’s return — probably because it doesn’t actually have a quantifiable in-game effect — but he’s widely regarded as the top pitching instructor in baseball and he’s enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with Wednesday night’s starter, Chris Carpenter.
Perhaps the reunion will provide a mental boost for the Cardinals right-hander as he takes the mound in Houston for a massively important outing. Or maybe it will do nothing. Either way, it’s good drama.
The Cards enter play Wednesday evening in a tie with the Braves for the National League Wild Card.
