Vin Scully to return for 63rd season in Dodgers booth

Legendary Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully announced during Friday’s game that he would return for his record 63rd season in 2012.

Scully, who in recent years has skipped road trips taking him east of the Rockies, indicated that he’ll maintain his usual schedule of home games and select road games.

Scully turns 85 in November.

As if the publicity swirling around Dodgers owner Frank McCourt couldn’t get bad enough, there were recent rumors that the team might let Scully go in order to save money.  Such a manuever, though, surely would have done more harm than good, financially and in every other way imaginable.

The Braves got a scare last night after first baseman Freddie Freeman was hit on the left wrist by a Hoby Milner fastball in the bottom of the eighth inning. It was doubly scary given that, less than a year ago, the same wrist was fractured when Aaron Loup plunked him last year, causing Freeman to miss over a month and a half.

Good news, though: the Braves just announced that Freeman’s X-rays are negative and that he’s day-to-day.

On the season, Freeman is batting .288/.468/.492 with two home runs, 12 RBI, and 12 runs scored in 79 plate appearances.
