Red Sox making Hurricane Irene plans for weekend

With Hurricane Irene’s projected path currently taking it through Massachusetts on Sunday evening, the Red Sox are talking with MLB about playing a preemptive doubleheader at Fenway Park on Friday or Saturday, the Boston Herald reports.

The A’s will be in Boston for a three-game series scheduled to begin Friday night.

Nothing has been decided about the schedule just yet, but a Friday doubleheader would make the most sense, particularly if it looks like Irene might arrive in Connecticut and Rhode Island as a hurricane.  If the storm encounters some resistance before then, perhaps Saturday would work instead.

“I think they’re throwing around a lot of ideas that are just ideas,” manager Terry Francona said. “Nobody wants to miss gates. The Red Sox don’t, the league doesn’t, for obvious reasons, and for competitive reasons, so do we. We’ll do the best we can.”

The Baltimore Orioles have claimed utilityman Jace Peterson off waivers from the Yankees.

Peterson has played in three games this season and has been DFA’d twice. He had no place to play in New York but perhaps the O’s can use his versatility. While mostly a second baseman in his career he’s appeared at every position except pitcher and catcher at some point along the way, and that’s useful. More useful for a team that isn’t going anyplace like Baltimore, I presume. Saves ’em on gas money from Norfolk when someone gets an owie.

To make room for Peterson the O’s moved Gabriel Ynoa, who is suffering from shoulder inflammation, from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list. Ynoa has yet to appear in a game this season.
