UPDATE: Encouraging news from the Nats’ clubhouse. The Nationals just announced that Lannan is day-to-day with a nasal contusion.

8:27 PM: You never like to see this.

Amanda Comak of the Washington Times reports that Nationals left-hander John Lannan exited tonight’s start against the Rockies in the top of the fourth inning after he was struck in the face with a comebacker off the bat of Ty Wigginton.

As Comak notes, Lannan was “bleeding immediately, likely from the nose” and immediately walked off the field with Nationals trainer Lee Kuntz.

We’ll pass along an update when more information is made available.

Lannan, 26, is 5-5 with a 3.48 ERA and 1.34 WHIP over 19 starts this season.

The Mets have scratched Jacob deGrom from tonight’s start against the San Diego Padres because of the risk of rain in New York. Rafael Montero will start in deGrom’s place.

Manager Terry Collins said there is no physical issue with deGrom, but that because of the chance of rain, he didn’t want to risk a short outing. de Grom will start Friday’s game against the Pirates.

Earlier today we talked about how David Price was knocked around in a minor league rehab start. Apparently he felt good while being knocked around because he’s going to make a start for the Red Sox on Monday afternoon against the White Sox.

Healthy is all that truly matters at this point, what with Drew Pomeranz struggling and Steven Wright out for the year. The Sox need someone to eat some innings at the moment. If it takes him a bit to get super sharp, well, so be it.
