Ben Zobrist drives in franchise-high eight runs for Rays

Having already focused on the bad, I guess it’s only fair to look at the good for the Rays on a day in which they won 15-3.

And that would be Ben Zobrist’s franchise-record eight-RBI game.

Zobrist overtook Carlos Pena’s team record (7 RBI on Sept. 5, 2007) with a 4-for-6 day that included a homer and two doubles. Setting him up were Johnny Damon, B.J. Upton and Matt Joyce, each of whom had exactly three hits while batting ahead of Zobrist in the order. Zobrist drove in Upton three times and Joyce twice.

Incredibly, Zobrist now leads the AL with 23 RBI, despite a .236 average. He was hitting .183 after going 0-for-5 on April 22, but in four games since, he’s driven in a whopping 16 runs.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that there is some momentum in talks between the Mariners and free agent outfielder Jon Jay.

Jay, 32, hit .296/.374/.375 in 433 plate appearances with the Cubs last season, which is adequate. He’s heralded more for his defense and his ability to play all three outfield spots.

The Mariners are losing center fielder Jarrod Dyson to free agency and likely don’t want to rely on Guillermo Heredia next season, hence the interest in Jay. The free agent class for center fielders is otherwise relatively weak.
