The Cubs and Rangers are in on Brandon Webb

Last week it seemed like the Nationals were the front runners for Brandon Webb’s services.  Now MLB.com’s Bill Ladson reports the Cubs and Rangers have “jumped ahead” of the Nats. The Cubs have reportedly been targeting Webb for some time, though their flirtation with Matt Garza has interrupted things a bit.  I don’t recall seeing the Rangers connected to Webb before now.

Webb hasn’t pitched since Opening Day of 2009 because of a shoulder injury that eventually required surgery. Why he has at least three teams eager to give him a contract given that his instructional league action had him throwing way below his usual velocity is beyond me.  But hey, if the dough’s low, why not?

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that there is some momentum in talks between the Mariners and free agent outfielder Jon Jay.

Jay, 32, hit .296/.374/.375 in 433 plate appearances with the Cubs last season, which is adequate. He’s heralded more for his defense and his ability to play all three outfield spots.

The Mariners are losing center fielder Jarrod Dyson to free agency and likely don’t want to rely on Guillermo Heredia next season, hence the interest in Jay. The free agent class for center fielders is otherwise relatively weak.
