The Orioles issue a statement about Luke Scott being a wacko birther

The Baltimore Orioles issued a statement this afternoon in response to the multimedia freakout that has gone down in the wake of Luke Scott saying that President Obama wasn’t born in the United States:

“Luke Scott’s comments do not reflect the opinion of the Baltimore Orioles organization. The fact is that Barack Obama is our President, duly elected by the people of the United States. End of story.”

Bud Selig is relieved. If the team hadn’t stepped in and said this he would have had no choice but to take decisive action. Such as announcing the formation of a committee to study the birthplace of President Obama. I’m sure that we would have received the results of the study by 2015.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that there is some momentum in talks between the Mariners and free agent outfielder Jon Jay.

Jay, 32, hit .296/.374/.375 in 433 plate appearances with the Cubs last season, which is adequate. He’s heralded more for his defense and his ability to play all three outfield spots.

The Mariners are losing center fielder Jarrod Dyson to free agency and likely don’t want to rely on Guillermo Heredia next season, hence the interest in Jay. The free agent class for center fielders is otherwise relatively weak.
