Adam LaRoche rumors; or, the Winter Meetings in a nutshell

6 Comments

This is pretty much how it goes all week here:

  • Writer A says that the Washington Nationals are poised to sign Adam LaRoche;
  • Writer B says, no, nothing imminent. There are talks, nothing more, and other teams are still interested.

Then everyone rushes to see who is listed as LaRoche’s agent in order to try to get a comment from him.  Then you stroll around the lobby to try to find the Nationals’ Assistant Associate Vice-Vice-Vice President of Non-Critical Operations to see if you can read any tells off his face when he says “fine” after you ask him how his day is going.

It’s all very scientific, really.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that there is some momentum in talks between the Mariners and free agent outfielder Jon Jay.

Jay, 32, hit .296/.374/.375 in 433 plate appearances with the Cubs last season, which is adequate. He’s heralded more for his defense and his ability to play all three outfield spots.

The Mariners are losing center fielder Jarrod Dyson to free agency and likely don’t want to rely on Guillermo Heredia next season, hence the interest in Jay. The free agent class for center fielders is otherwise relatively weak.
