Six or eight teams have inquired about Carl Pavano

Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post reports that the Nationals are one of “six or eight” teams to have engaged in discussions with Carl Pavano. Kilgore says that they met with Pavano’s agent at the GM meetings this week.

I wouldn’t read too much into the Nats specifically, because they tend to say that they’re interested in everyone.  They never quite seem to seal the deal on these things, however.  And there is competition here, as Kilgore says that six or eight teams are interested in Pavano.  Which makes sense to me, because he — and not Jorge De La Rosa — is the second best pitcher available in my view.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that there is some momentum in talks between the Mariners and free agent outfielder Jon Jay.

Jay, 32, hit .296/.374/.375 in 433 plate appearances with the Cubs last season, which is adequate. He’s heralded more for his defense and his ability to play all three outfield spots.

The Mariners are losing center fielder Jarrod Dyson to free agency and likely don’t want to rely on Guillermo Heredia next season, hence the interest in Jay. The free agent class for center fielders is otherwise relatively weak.
