The Irony of the McCourt case

Yesterday on the witness stand, Frank McCourt repeated something he said Jamie McCourt would say over and over during their marriage: “You can make a billion. You can lose a billion. I don’t care. I just want my own nest egg.” This is supposed to be evidence that Jamie had no interest in the Dodgers and wanted to be financially separated from his investments. And it’s fairly convincing evidence in the context of the legal issues at play in the case.

But ain’t it delicious that the more financially conservative Frank makes Jamie out to be, the less likely it is that she’ll get a piece of the baseball team he’s running into the ground?

According to former major leaguer and current broadcaster Ryan Spilborghs, Jenny Cavnar will be calling play-by-play of Monday night’s game against the Padres for the Rockies. The broadcast will be on AT&T Sportsnet Rocky Mountain Region.

Cavnar will be at least the third woman to call televised play-by-play for a major league team, joining Gayle Gardner (Rockies, 1993) and Suzyn Waldman (Yankees, mid-1990’s).

Broadcasting remains largely the domain of white men, so it’s always good when women and people of color are able to have a seat in the broadcasting booth.
