Even with all their injuries, Red Sox release Jeremy Hermida

Acquired from the Marlins and signed to a one-year, $3.4 million contract this winter, Jeremy Hermida was brought in to be the Red Sox’s fourth outfielder and could have been in line for a ton of playing time given the team’s amazing number of injuries.
Instead he hit just .203/.257/.348 in 52 games while missing time with various injuries of his own, including fractured ribs, and yesterday the Red Sox released him from Triple-A rather than give him a September call-up.
Hermida is a former top prospect and hit .296/.369/.501 as a 23-year-old for the Marlins in 2007, but he’s batted just .246/.324/.392 in three seasons and 1,221 plate appearances since then and is now a 26-year-old with a .755 career OPS. Hermida cleared waivers after being designated for assignment on July 31 and will almost surely have to settle for a minor-league deal at this point.

White Sox reliever Danny Farquhar passed out in the dugout after completing his outing against the Astros on Friday evening. The cause of the incident has yet to be determined, but Farquhar was supervised by the club’s medical personnel and EMTs and regained consciousness before being taken to Rush University Medical Center for further treatment and testing. A diagnosis has not been announced by the team.

Farquhar pitched 2/3 of an inning in relief during Friday’s 10-0 loss to Houston. He was brought in to relieve James Shields in the top of the sixth inning and was immediately bested by George Springer, who belted a ground-rule double down the right field line and scored Brian McCann and Derek Fisher for the Astros’ sixth and seventh runs of the night. He recovered to strike out Jose Altuve, but was again punished with a two-run homer from Carlos Correa (his first of two), and induced a fly out to end the inning.

The 31-year-old righty pitched just 7 1/3 innings with the club prior to Friday’s performance, issuing four hits, three runs, two homers and eight strikeouts in seven appearances.
