New manager Buck Showalter far from committed to Alfredo Simon as Orioles' closer

Alfredo Simon took over closer duties in Baltimore when he was called up from Triple-A in late April, converting 15 of 17 save chances with a 3.40 ERA and .248 opponents’ batting average through his first 30 appearances.
However, he’s struggled lately, blowing two saves and allowing seven runs in his last six games, and not surprisingly new manager Buck Showalter is already talking about making some changes in the ninth inning:

I’m sure Simon will get some more opportunities along the way, but I feel like we have some other people capable of doing it other than him. We’ll see what each night dictates. Some guys down there have shown that they are capable of getting big outs for us. He has above-average pitches but he’s still got to locate them, too. Guys can turn around a bullet up here.

Koji Uehara is the most obvious non-Simon option to close and then there’s Mike Gonzalez, who was signed to be the closer this offseason and has pitched reasonably well since returning from the disabled list late last month.

The Fernando Rodney Experience hasn’t been a good one for the Twins thus far. The veteran closer served up three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to the Yankees on Thursday afternoon, erasing a 4-1 lead and blowing his third save in five opportunities.

In the ninth, Didi Gregorius reached on a throwing error by Miguel Sano. Giancarlo Stanton then singled, and Gary Sanchez followed up with a walk-off three-run home run.

Rodney, 41, now sports a 6.75 ERA on the year. He inked a one-year, $4.5 million contract with the Twins back in December. The club has an option for next year worth $4.25 million. If things keep going the way they’re going, the Twins aren’t going to want to pick up that option.

The Twins may even want to think about moving Ryan Pressly or Addison Reed into the closer’s role, even if just temporarily. Pressly has been terrific, tossing 13 scoreless innings with 18 strikeouts. Reed has a 2.25 ERA with 12 strikeouts in 12 innings.
