Derek Holland cuts bullpen session short due to more shoulder pain

After struggling as a rookie last season Rangers left-hander Derek Holland began this year back at Triple-A and looked great following his call-up in mid-May, going 2-0 with a 2.60 ERA and 15/3 K/BB ratio in three starts.
He was used as a reliever on May 26 and then rejoined the rotation for a Sunday night start against the Twins two weeks ago, but was removed from the game in the second inning after throwing in the mid-80s and revealed afterward that his hand was numb.
Texas placed Holland on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation, but now it sounds like something more significant is going on. Holland had to cut short a bullpen session yesterday due to more shoulder pain, throwing only 17 of a scheduled 30 pitches.
At the very least the setback means he’s unlikely to return this month and there’s now some fear that the promising 23-year-old southpaw could be facing surgery.

Brewers are interested in Jake Arrieta

Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports that the Brewers may be interested in Jake Arrieta.

The Brewers could definitely use a front line starter, especially with Jimmy Nelson slated to miss a good chunk of next season due to a rotator cuff injury. Arrieta will be expensive, obviously, but the Brewers have a lot more payroll flexibility than most teams, with only minimal money due on long term contracts. Most of that is for Ryan Braun, but even the outlay for him is reasonable, with deferred money involved. Tom Haudricourt of the Journal-Sentinel laid all of that out back in October.

Milwaukee had a surprisingly good 2017 and they have the ability to add in free agency or to take on salary in trades if they want to. Maybe they don’t get Arrieta but they could make a splash this offseason.
