Alex Cora hurt himself, of course

Alex Cora.jpgUh-oh. Matt Cerrone of MetsBlog informs us that Alex Cora injured his back while playing with Criollos de Caguas in the Puerto Rican Winter League last week.

Cora, 34, signed a one-year, $2
million contract with the Mets earlier this month. He batted
.251/.320/.310 with one home run, 18 RBI and 31 runs scored in 217
at-bats in ’09 before undergoing season-ending surgery on both thumbs
in August.

For those keeping score, Cora has a bad back while new catcher Henry Blanco already has a bum shoulder. It will be awful tough to top last year’s calvalcade of injuries, but the Mets are off to a pretty impressive start.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that there is some momentum in talks between the Mariners and free agent outfielder Jon Jay.

Jay, 32, hit .296/.374/.375 in 433 plate appearances with the Cubs last season, which is adequate. He’s heralded more for his defense and his ability to play all three outfield spots.

The Mariners are losing center fielder Jarrod Dyson to free agency and likely don’t want to rely on Guillermo Heredia next season, hence the interest in Jay. The free agent class for center fielders is otherwise relatively weak.
